Customs & Excise could not immediately produce them. The Judge dismissed the jury and abandoned the trial for want of a few hours delay. He ordered a re- trial that lasted four days. The second jury, fooled with fabricated exhibits, convicted the seaman. He was sentenced to seven years! Although the Court of Appeal, aided by defence and prosecution Counsel, suppressed the 'miracle'. New evidence came to light a year later. A foreign diplomat swore an affidavit revealing a conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. The trial Judge's actions came under suspicion but he was killed within three months.
